Puppies may breathe rapidly when sleeping if they have recently played or exercised, or if they are too hot.
Sometimes Fast breathing during rest periods can also be a sign of something more serious, such as food poisoning.
Make sure to keep your dog out of the heat and ensure they always have plenty of water.

A puppy's rapid breathing may, therefore, be divided into two categories:
normal, physiological causes and the worrisome pathological ones.
Understanding the differences between these two is, therefore, important so that you know what steps you should take.
Usually normal, physiological causes often include scenarios where you would expect seeing an increased breathing rate: such as taking your puppy for a romp in the yard or the onset of strong emotions such as excitement, fear, or stress. Pathological causes for rapid breathing in puppies, on the other hand, are often the result of medical conditions.

Hi Ann. It's pawfectly normal. Gadhu also used to breathe really fast earlier when he was tiny.
Now it's comparatively balanced out.
Our vet ensured it's nothing to worry. As mentioned by fellow pawrents, puppies do breathe fast! ๐๐ถ
Critical scenarios are rare, causes being any of these:
Asthma
Breed characteristics (squish-faced breeds are more prone to breathing problems)
Kennel Cough - keep a check on its timely vaccination, it's dangerous. โ
Laryngeal Paralysis
Trachea issues
Rhinitis (bacterial or fungal infection in the nasal chambers)
Pressure on windpipe
Stiffening of airways
Smoke inhalation - no smoking zone near pups โ
Collapsing trachea
Lung diseases such as cancer, parasitic infections or pneumonia
Compressed lungs
Hernia
Heatstroke - check for hydration and body temperature regulation in summers โ
Anemia
Nausea
Medication

Several factors can trigger fast breathing during sleep. Your vet is your best resource when it comes to figuring out why your puppyโs breathing rate is elevated, but these are some common causes.
Exertion:
Best-case scenario: Your pup is still cooling down from a rousing play session or exercise.
Temperature:
Again, dogs โsweatโ by breathing quickly. If itโs a hot day or you have the heat on high, your pup may breathe quickly while napping .
Trachea problems:
The trachea is a dogโs windpipe. If it collapses or has too much pressure, your puppy may start breathing more heavily. A tracheal collapse can make it harder for air to make its way into your pupโs lungs. Other symptoms of this issue include a dry cough. This problem typically occurs in older dogs, but puppies can have issues too .
Heart problems:
Heavy breathing can be a sign of heart disease. If your dog is diagnosed with ticker trouble, the vet may have you monitor their resting breathing rate more often.

Accelerated breathing is normal, particularly within the puppy's first few weeks. Any new experience like going in a car for the first time can bring on fast breathing, which will normalize as the puppy gets used to the experience

they simply do what puppies do when they fall asleep. In fact, this type of rapid breathing is similar to what you may see in an infant as they try to catch something .The reason for the breathing and movements is because the puppies are dreaming.
